Range extenders allow you place extra devices between the gateway and the sensors which effectively repeat the signal. These are typically mains powered as they tend to be kept awake by all the sensors trying to send to the gateway. Zigbee allows range extenders. Currently, Machine Sentry® does not support range extenders.
